For Full HD screens, it’s clear that the standards have moved on from last year. We now expect them all to come with a certain set of features, smart apps and connectivity as standard.
What’s also staggering is just how well these TVs perform at their price brackets. The sleek and classy Sony has size on its side, the large 55in offering an immersive, crisp and bold performance that is hugely enjoyable. Black levels are glossy and lush too, even if they tend to swallow up some finer detail.
It would be unfair to judge the Finlux next to it, but a 48in screen for £400 is one of the best bargains you’ll find this year. You may be braced for compromising picture quality when on a strict budget, but you can rest assured that this smart-looking Finlux is of an admirably high standard for its price.
But it’s the Samsung UE48J6300 that wins us over and gains that elusive fifth star. Its excellent picture offers the most natural, exciting colour balance, the detail is subtle and crisp, and we couldn’t tear our eyes away from its balanced, engaging performance. At £700, it deserves your full attention.
